Replicated Environments

I think this photograph by Bryan Campbell could be replicated in a school environment because it shows a large group of people all with different kinds of expressions on their faces. Also you can see they all have different personalities by their expressions and what they are wearing. I think this could be similar to a school environment because just by walking through the halls you see large groups of people walk by with different expressions on their faces, and you can see their type of personality by their actions and what they wear.

A Deeper Meaning

1] what specifically is the purpose of heisler's photographs? is it simply vanity-driven or does it perform a deeper function?
-I believe his photographs show a deeper function, by trying to show who the person is or what their occupation is.

2] as many of heisler's photos are made for specific stories or magazine covers they have a specific look, but are they fundementally different from gordon parks' "american gothic"?
-I think that both heisler's and gordon park's are similar in that they both show a deeper meaning. For example you may not just be able to look at the photograph and see the point, but you may have to look for the real truth behind it.

3] pick the portrait of the actor hugh grant from the prophoto.com website and critique it for content, purpose, and effectiveness.
-I like this photograph of hugh grant because i think it is a good example of heisler using a deeper meaning. It is very insightful into the actors life, because it may not just be about his acing life but his real life.

Gordon Park's "American Gothic"

1] what you see in the photograph [simple and objective]
-In this photograph is see an African American women with a blank look on her face. There is a big American Flag in the background and she is holding a mop and a broom.

2] what the photo looks like its saying to you [your initial analysis]
-I believe this photograph shows how many people view African Americans and their role in society. The blank look on her face shows a discontent with what she is doing and a look that this is it for her.

3] comparisons and contrasts to grant wood's "american gothic"
-This photograph by Gordon Parks is very similar to Grant Wood's "American Gothic" because the look on the peoples faces are very plain with little expression. In Park's photograph the American flag symbolizes America, and in Wood's painting the
house and barn also symbolizes the American life. They are different by the photograph implying to African Americacns, and the painting implying to Whites.

4] what you think the the photograph really means [your interpretation]
-I think this photo really means that this is how African Americans were viewed in society and the role of their life. I Think it shows sadness in her face, and really an unknowing about her life.

5] whether or not you think that it is a successful photograph
-i believe this photograph is successful because it brings forth a strong meaning and portrays different images to different kinds of people.

"Seeing" through the window...

I like this photograph by Robert Frank because the way he photographed it looks as if you are really there. He makes you feel like your part of the photograph by putting the curtain in front of the camera making it look as if your the one looking out the window. You get to see the big picture and not only see it but feel it as well.

Styles of Lighting

This style of lighting is called broad lighting. This is when the face is tilted towards the light and you get a shadow on the the side of the face away from the light.

This lighting is called short lighting. This is when the face is directed away from the light and the shadow lays on the opposite side of the face. With this lighting you can see a distinct shadow on the nose.

This lighting is called rembrant lighting. With this lighting the light is almost directly to the side of the person. As you can see there is a triangular light right below the persons right eye.

This style of lighting is called butterfly lighting. With this the light is straight on the person and raised above head. The shadows with this type of light are placed under the main features of the persons face such as the nose and chin.
