[FIVE]

ENVIRONMENTAL PORTRAITURE
This photograph is a good example of environmental portraiture because it shows someone who is in there everyday element where they spend a lot of time. It is a strong image overall because it shows a portrait by the subject not looking at the camera and posed.

DOCUMENTARY
This documentary photograph is a good example of its genre because it shows in depth what kind of area this phot o graph was taken and how the person lives (which is me), being out in the country vs. a city home. This photograph has a strong overall image because it really shows in detail a deeper meaning to a documentary photograph

DOCUMENTARY
This too is a good example of a documentary photograph in a different way then the other photograph. This photo shows an action of one of the office workers at southwestern and just one of the things that goes on throughout the day. This is a strong image overall because it shows an everyday action of someone in the school.

STILL LIFE
This photograph is a good example of a still life photograph because it shows a random object that is used by many people. This image is strong overall because it shows the subject very clearly with a subtle rock textured background.

LANDSCAPE
This photograph is a good example of landscape because is focusing on the long white fence but shows all the scenery of the woods in the distance. This image is strong overall because it uses the rule of thirds using the fence trees and sky to divide it up.

Look Of A Photograph

1] Aperture- The aperture is an adjustable opening on the camera that limits the amount of light that is coming in.

2] Shutter- The shutter is a device on the camera that controls the amount of time a photograph is being exposed to light by opening and closing.

3] Burning and Dodging- Burning is allowing a longer exposure time by increasing amount of time the light is being shown on the photograph. You would do this to a lighter area on the photograph to make it darker and more detailed. Dodging is just the opposite, it is when you decrease the exposure time by making a darker area on your photograph lighter.

4] Under-Exposing- Under Exposing is when you expose a photograph for to short of time and not enough light is let in. If this occurs then the photograph will turn out very dark and may be hard to see the details.

5] Rembrandt Lighting- In Rembrandt lighting you create a triangle shape right below the eye of the person you are photographing. Also one side of the face is more lit from the on coming light while the other side is more shaded.

This photograph above shows an example of under-exposure. It shows under-exposure because the photo is too dark meaning its was exposed for too short of time and not enough light was let in. This could try to be fixed by dodging the photograph to make it lighter.

Greg Gorman

Greg Gorman

Greg Gorman was Born in 1949 in Kansas City, Missouri. He began photographing when he went to college for photojournalism from 1967 to 1969. To begin his work his important influences were; American Portrait photographer Richard Avedon, European fashion photographers Guy Bourdin and Peter Lindbergh as well. Gorman’s most important influence was Helmut Newton. These influences help start him to see what he liked.
Greg Gorman’s contemporaries include Mark Seliger and Annie Leibovitz. Gorman is mainly an American portrait photographer of Hollywood celebrities. He also spends time photographing motion pictures music personalities, and ad campaigns such as Reebok and Maybelline. Gorman has a discriminating and unique style of photography, a classical tradition that really focuses on the details. He has published many books, such as, “Greg Gorman (volume 1 and 2),” “Greg Gorman Inside Life,” “As I See it,” “Perspectives,” “Greg Gorman: Just Between Us.” He also has created the portfolio, “The Who’s Who in Hollywood.” This shows his much success.
A Critical overview on Greg Gorman’s work was done by director John Waiters. He said that Gorman makes people feel happy not just about being photographed but also being famous. Alex Craig and Andrew Stafford said that Greg’s pictures unmask the celebrities personality. His friends are his subjects and his subjects often become his friends. From seeing his photographs and great work you can see what a good photographer looks like, and the hard work that is put into it.

Replicated Environments

I think this photograph by Bryan Campbell could be replicated in a school environment because it shows a large group of people all with different kinds of expressions on their faces. Also you can see they all have different personalities by their expressions and what they are wearing. I think this could be similar to a school environment because just by walking through the halls you see large groups of people walk by with different expressions on their faces, and you can see their type of personality by their actions and what they wear.

A Deeper Meaning

1] what specifically is the purpose of heisler's photographs? is it simply vanity-driven or does it perform a deeper function?
-I believe his photographs show a deeper function, by trying to show who the person is or what their occupation is.

2] as many of heisler's photos are made for specific stories or magazine covers they have a specific look, but are they fundementally different from gordon parks' "american gothic"?
-I think that both heisler's and gordon park's are similar in that they both show a deeper meaning. For example you may not just be able to look at the photograph and see the point, but you may have to look for the real truth behind it.

3] pick the portrait of the actor hugh grant from the prophoto.com website and critique it for content, purpose, and effectiveness.
-I like this photograph of hugh grant because i think it is a good example of heisler using a deeper meaning. It is very insightful into the actors life, because it may not just be about his acing life but his real life.

Gordon Park's "American Gothic"

1] what you see in the photograph [simple and objective]
-In this photograph is see an African American women with a blank look on her face. There is a big American Flag in the background and she is holding a mop and a broom.

2] what the photo looks like its saying to you [your initial analysis]
-I believe this photograph shows how many people view African Americans and their role in society. The blank look on her face shows a discontent with what she is doing and a look that this is it for her.

3] comparisons and contrasts to grant wood's "american gothic"
-This photograph by Gordon Parks is very similar to Grant Wood's "American Gothic" because the look on the peoples faces are very plain with little expression. In Park's photograph the American flag symbolizes America, and in Wood's painting the
house and barn also symbolizes the American life. They are different by the photograph implying to African Americacns, and the painting implying to Whites.

4] what you think the the photograph really means [your interpretation]
-I think this photo really means that this is how African Americans were viewed in society and the role of their life. I Think it shows sadness in her face, and really an unknowing about her life.

5] whether or not you think that it is a successful photograph
-i believe this photograph is successful because it brings forth a strong meaning and portrays different images to different kinds of people.

"Seeing" through the window...

I like this photograph by Robert Frank because the way he photographed it looks as if you are really there. He makes you feel like your part of the photograph by putting the curtain in front of the camera making it look as if your the one looking out the window. You get to see the big picture and not only see it but feel it as well.
