Greg Gorman

Greg Gorman was Born in 1949 in Kansas City, Missouri. He began photographing when he went to college for photojournalism from 1967 to 1969. To begin his work his important influences were; American Portrait photographer Richard Avedon, European fashion photographers Guy Bourdin and Peter Lindbergh as well. Gorman’s most important influence was Helmut Newton. These influences help start him to see what he liked.
Greg Gorman’s contemporaries include Mark Seliger and Annie Leibovitz. Gorman is mainly an American portrait photographer of Hollywood celebrities. He also spends time photographing motion pictures music personalities, and ad campaigns such as Reebok and Maybelline. Gorman has a discriminating and unique style of photography, a classical tradition that really focuses on the details. He has published many books, such as, “Greg Gorman (volume 1 and 2),” “Greg Gorman Inside Life,” “As I See it,” “Perspectives,” “Greg Gorman: Just Between Us.” He also has created the portfolio, “The Who’s Who in Hollywood.” This shows his much success.
A Critical overview on Greg Gorman’s work was done by director John Waiters. He said that Gorman makes people feel happy not just about being photographed but also being famous. Alex Craig and Andrew Stafford said that Greg’s pictures unmask the celebrities personality. His friends are his subjects and his subjects often become his friends. From seeing his photographs and great work you can see what a good photographer looks like, and the hard work that is put into it.
